KFC - Toman Fishing

Since I had just returned from the Durian farm in Segamat, we had a short meeting at LSR to celebrate Alicia's birthday and to eat durians that I had lugged back from the land of durians. The rest of the children mischievously buried her presents in the sand at the playground. The poor girl had to dig it out with her bare hands. But of course, X marks the spot and it was easily found.

Lucky for us, Marcus came to join us. And we discovered his secret talent in opening durians. Otherwise, I would probably have hacked it to pieces. The rest had a good time devouring the durians and luckily, I had brought back enough.

As we were at LSR, I tried a little fishing too. But again, the fishes were not at home. After trying for an hour, I gave up.

Remebering that ZW had a secret spot, we went to the place for recce. And to our excitement, we saw people catching some good size toman in front of us. Unable to contain our itch, ZW and I decided to come back again with our rods.

Reaching there, we tried to squeeze ourselves along the rocky bank for fishing. ZW was the first to hit on a baby toman. But alas as I was getting my camera out, it gave ZW the slip and fell back into the water. I hit the next fish and again, it was another toman. This seemed to be a Toman spot. ZW again hit on a fish, and this time, it was no baby. It gave the rod a good fight and the lines were even spooling out. But unfortunately, we only managed to video it before it again threw the hook and ran away. I took the next fish and another baby. After that, all fell quiet. And since it was getting late, we made a move back to civilisation.

It was a great short session and a very fruitful ones. ZW was very successful with his unbranded silvery blue lure. My 3D minnow also worked well. Definitely a very potential spot here.

Secret Place Reroute

Flagpost all ready

I was wondering where to fish today when PT suddenly called me out of the blue. He said to try out the H place. But to my knowledge, all entrances to this place had been closed, very much to my disappointment. The few times I had been there, the route was always changing. Going in was like a driving into a labyrinth.

Anyway, we said to try out regardless. PT had been there many times, and may have had a few tricks up his sleeve. Sure enough, as we cruised down Changi coast road, the usual entrances were blocked. But PT rerouted to his special way and lo and behold, we were back in Fishing Wonderland once more.

I was elated at this finding, and definitely want to revisit it, before things changed again. This area had been under construction since god knows when, and was likely to be opened to public very soon. When that happens, it was likely that fishing would be prohibited.

Impassable

We drove around, with PT aiming to get to his favourite spot. But try as we might, there was no possible route to it, and we frequently ended up in some rocky dead end. Some parts of the road was tough and undulating, and PT car really took a beating. And to make things worse, day light was dimming. Once it got dark, finding the way out would surely be quite challenging.

And indeed this was what happened. We were nearly lost in the sandy maze and couldn't find the way out. So no fishing for us, and even getting out was a problem. By then it was already 7pm, and it was not easy to recognise which way we had come by. But with some good luck, we finally managed to navigate back to a familiar bridge landmark. And from there, we were safe.

By the time we got out, it was already 7.30pm, just nice for a dinner at CV. A and D drove out the car and met us there. We decided then to just go for our familiar Broadwalk place for simple fishing.

PT had been there few days back and had gone back empty handed. Today we all tried out SP, with me on my usual lucky grub. But for some strange reason, nothing was biting at all that day. It might have been the brief rain that made the water cold and fishes moved deeper to the sea. Even on apollo with prawn meat, there were no takers. I felt some light taps, and that was it. PT had the unfortunate incident of losing his favourite lure again.

Seeing no action, we packed at 11.30pm and returned home defeated. Kind of a strange night, and the first for me to return with not even a catfish.

Luring at Secret Place

There was a meetup at CV, and it was a good time to go back to Secret Place for some recce. The last time, the way via the normal entrance to the sea was blocked. I wanted to see if it was reopened again after all these months.

The road in seemed better now, as the contruction was nearing its end. There was a possible route to the sea, but I could only stop the car a distance away and trekked a little to get to the water.

The beach here was nice and relatively clean. However, while I was setting up, I was attacked by sand flies. A and D got it too. The bites were terrible. I had got more than 10 bites on both my legs and 1 on my arm. D got about 5, and A also about 5. Got to be more alert about them next time. We were like, "oh, sand flies..." and had still hung around the area. :(

I spent about 1 hour luring with my Crystal Minnow, but it was largely fruitless. My rod was only a 6 footer, and I couldn't cast too far. Use the cow strength a bit more, I would get birdnest on my rod. It happened 2 or 3 times, and I had to waste time untangling the mess.

I spied a small fish scattering away, and that brought my hopes up a little. During the hour session, there was a definite bite. Unfortunately, it didn't connect. In my haste to cast again, I hit out a little too hard, and ended with a "5 minute to untangle" birdnest. After that, nothing much except for algae and seaweed.

As I was going off, a group of malays came in with long rods. I suppose they were planning to camp the night here. It was already 6+pm. Seeing my time was up, I packed to go.
