My car servicing was up and I had to run into JB to visit my workshop. Pat had a stretch of leaves and joined me for the trip. We were planning to do some simple fishing after my servicing. I thought to go to Kulai Nanyang Fish Farm again. The last two times there, I had returned with a substantial zero. And it wasn't that the place has no fish. They are there in fact, and will sneer at me every once a while with some big splashes in the water. The local folks there seemed to know how to catch them and they were landing them quite frequently, right under my nose.
The last time, someone was doing fly fishing and was pretty successful, I must say. The short two hours there, I saw him landing about 4-5 Patins on fly. At that time, I wasn't into fly fishing and didn't think to observe how he was doing it and what fly he was using. Today, I had packed along my fly rod and gave it a try. As the farm wasn't too crowded, I had ample space to do my casting. All the flies I brought along, I tried. But all I caught were some branches behind me once a while.
Pat wasn't doing too well for his float fishing either. When we arrived, the man only gave us bread to fish as he didn't have the kng then. Although there were some bites, the fish quickly released them before we could react. But the local certainly know how to catch the fishes and was regularly bringing them up. It might be due to their customised concoction of the kng they had prepared.
After an hour plus or so, the ladies got bored and gave us another half an hour to fish. I admitted defeat for my fly rod and switch to my Sakura for some float fishing. I had a brief bite on the last minute but the fish was smart and released it quickly. Pat too had a nugde but again didn't connect. We left the place defeated. But while chatting with a local chinese guy beside us, we were told that there is another catch and release pond nearby. When we heard the word "arapamai", we all dripped saliva uncontrollably. On the way back, we did a detour to find the place but missed it. But with a carload of unhappy ladies, we better head for shopping and food else we won't be able to return in 1 piece.

Kulai Nanyang fishing pond
I am not much of a fishing pond person, as I don't find fishing in a fishing pond sporting. But this fishing pond had been featured in some blogs, and I found it interesting enough to give it a try. It is also a catch and release pond, quite a new concept for fishing pond operators. Due to lack of time and money, I did not think that I would ever have a chance to be fishing for Patins, Pacus, Carps and all the fresh water monsters in a natural setting. A visit to the pay pond seemed like a good change.
To top it off, it was very cheap fishing here. Per rod only would cost RM8. And that's for the whole day from 10am till 7pm. Unfortunately, luring is not allowed. Darn.
Morning stop at Mac in Skudai

Here. But too early

Suppose to park on top

Wishing pond

Lots of car eating flies here

Since too early, fresbies time

Floating caterpillar joining in the game

Reaching there after a early morning bash through the checkpoint, we were too early. D and E took the time to have some fun playing fresbies in the big compound. The place looked kind of oldish and broken down. Quite like the old style fishing ponds that used to be common in Choa Chu Kang/Yio Chu Kangs areas.
Can do prawn fishing here too

The flies attracting mixture. RM2 per ball

They got bored after 5 mins

My 2 rods and the "rod holder". Big splashes on the right

When we entered, we could see big fishes making splashes in the water. I was thinking that it would really be easy fishing here. I was dead wrong. For the whole of 3 hours, there were only 3 catches (not by me) in a pond of 20-30 rods. Somehow, the fishes might have been accustomed to the fishing pressure here, and would be quite careful to "pounce" on any food here. I was using the housebrand mixture of dough. The fishes wouldn't even touch it. The most were some slight twitches on my 2 rods, and that was about it.
Dough didn't work. Added Kaya bread. No work also

This guy got a monster

Our corner on the left

The important aerator

Two wild animals

Perfect view to calm the mind

There's an aquarium beside the pond

But someone across did get a very good one. It seemed that the regulars here have their own mixture of dough, and do not use the bait prepared by the operator. The fish was making the reel screech noisily and put up a very good fight. The guy tried to land it but was careless, and the line snapped. What a waste. I thought it looked like a huge Patin. The other fishes caught were a Tilapia and another Patin.
At 1pm, I admitted defeat and packed. The experience kind of reinforce the idea that I wasn't keen on fishing in a pay pond. The dull wait for the fish to bite, in a shoulder to shoulder fishing environment, shared by buzzing houseflies and mosquitoes. Not quite my cup of tea.
