KFC - Kong Kong Rakit Recce

Used to be able to fish at the Jetty for free under the old restuarant management

Rakit with the white roof

We had always detoured on the Kong Kong road towards sg layang. Actually, I had been to Kong Kong many years back and even did a spot of "boat" fishing there. There is a resort/restaurant at the end of the road. They also provided facilities like rental of boats for people keen on going fishing.

I decided to revisit this place again. The management here had changed hands since and when i asked around, I was told that the boss would not allow people to fish on the Jetty. However, the staff there was ok to close one eye. But better still, there was a Rakit just minutes around the water, and there, we could fish at the cost of RM15 per pax. According to him, there were good catches there. Definitely a place for future KFC visits.

Bustling activites here

I left the resort and went to the village Jetty to have a look around. To my surprise, there were many people holding rods and fishing stuff and boarding on boats. I was naturally curious and went to ask around about the fishing here.

The Jetty Quaint Coffee Shop. The Goreng Pisang here is damn good

Uncle telling us to contact him

We had some drinks at the coffee shop and started chatting to some guys there. However, the information was quite inconsistent and rather suspicious. According to the uncle, the boat could bring us to the rakit at the cost of RM120 per trip for 8 persons. And there will be another fee of RM120 on the return. The cost at the Rakit, would have to be checked with the Rakit owner. We asked for the Rakit contact but the uncle gave us his instead.

When asked about where the people going, they replied that they were going boat fishing. Somehow that didn't seem right as I even see small children boarding the boat heading towards the many Rakits on the water.

Recce - Permas Jaya

Their version of Rakit with nuclear facility behind.

This morning, I had to get my car fixed in preparation for the mandatory inspection coming up. Since I couldn't return back to Sin till 4pm, I wandered around Permas Jaya to check out the area. From my GPS, it was near the sea, facing singapore. Sure enough, there were roads leading to the waterfront. From there, I could see Admiralty road. Sembawang Park with the Naval base was just to my left.

The water level at that time was rather high, but the sun was bloody hot. However, it looked too tempting for me not to give it a try. I quickly rigged my rod and started casting away. I could see the occasional splashes of fishes in the water. But I later found out that they were made by the half beaks that are abundant near the water. As my lure moved pass them, they would leap out of the way, making splashes on the surface.

Other than that, I didn't have any big fish coming to crush my lure. I was using my faithful white pink crystal minnow that had quite a bit of war scars. But one mis-timed throw saw the reel locking and the line snapped. Lure flew out into the water, and was disconnected from me. I couldn't do much except to see it floating slowly away into the big ocean. Farewell my friend, you have served me well.

Recce - Helipad

Golf course

Cafe

I had read about this secret fishing spot, known as the Helipad at Tanjong Rhu. It was also notorious for a Gay hangout, sometimes known as the Gay beach. I think this was about the only spot that I had not discovered in Singapore. After some digging around, here was what I found. For people driving there, the car could park at the golf course near to it ie Marina Golf Course. Of cos, I had not been there before, since I not into golfing. But this was a driving range. So, it was quite a good find to enter the Golf Course and find that one could just drive in like this. There wasn't any security post requiring to see membership card. Parking was convenient and free, and there was even a cafe for a quick drink and bite.

Barricaded

Barricaded

But luck was not with me. All around the golf course, the place was closed for construction so tightly that there was totally no way to walk in. We tried a few entry points, but all were barricaded by metal fences. I even went round the condo at Tanjong Rhu, but there was just no possible way. The way via East Coast Park, I hadn't tried. But given the zestlessness of the lock down, I wouldn't be surprised that it was covered as well.

Nice fishing spot. Problem is..where to park?

Here also barricaded

But the exploration brought me to realize that just round the condo, it was quite a nice spot for fishing. Difficult thing was the Parking: all double yellow lines around. Another thing was that now the water quality would be quite bad. Not likely to have many fishes here anymore due to the construction work to dam up the whole place and turn it into a fresh water reservoir. Well, in future, this might just be a good spot for PBs.

No fishing

I gave up on the attempt to touch down on the Helipad, and moved away to CV for dinner. Along the way, while crossing the bridge, I saw quite a school of small fishes nibbling at the rocks. (I think they were mullets). Tempted, I rigged up my rod with small hooks and got some prawn meat. But it wasn't effective. I think mullets don't go for prawn meat. Then A pointed out that there was no fishing allowed. Quite surprised, and I looked and it was true. There were No Fishing signs on both sides of the bank. Darn, another spot gone. I gave up and packed, and then proceeded for dinner. Why why why?

Recce - RSYC

Not exactly a recce trip. But we were headed for lunch, led by a colleague. It was amazing how hidden this place is. Right in between the PSA containers and the old Macdonalds at West Coast, there was this marina.

I didn't think they would allow fishing here. A quick check on the water saw some schools of half beaks. Water was quite dirty due to the proximity to the big boats. But given the little fishing pressure here, it might be productive.

Lunch was not too bad, and quite inexpensive. Shall be back again.

Father & Son boat...how touching.

Try out - Port Dickson

This was more of a driving trip than fishing. But I had formed the habit to always pack my light rod with me where I go. The plan was to hit Port Dickson town and drive down the coastal road, checking out all the tourist places. It being near the sea, there should be quite a bit of opportunity to fish.

On the way

I had driven up about 2 years back. But that time, being the first time, I was quite lost. Today, with the help of my trusty GPS, getting lost was a thing of the past. Where-ever I drive, I had the benefit of knowing exactly where I was.

Port Dickson Town
GPS said we were there

The town

Reaching there, Port Dickson town wasn't much to look at. I was stopped at a MY police spot check, but luckily, I was waved onwards. The ferry terminal itself looked quite run down. Water was dirty and partly due to the low tide, the rubbish was everywhere. I wasn't too sure if this is the actual Port of the Port Dickson. Couple of years back, I remembered I was on Star Cruise and we made a stop here. But this place didn't look like it could take a big ship. Might be some newer port elsewhere.

PD Beach resort

Fairly ok beach

I made my way next down south, stopping at a place called PD Beach resort. It was like still under final touches of construction, and most things were like quite new. But the beach wasn't too great. It was fairly clean, but again water level was low. There was a pack of dogs at one end, and it it didn't look safe to move around.

Can go there?

Moving downwards, I next hit Regency resort. This was a very nice place, with a clean and well maintained beach. But unfortunately, I had arrived during the low tide. Nothing much to see then. The first trip here, we actually had lunch at this place. There were a couple of resort pools, and D wanted very much to swim in. But no, we were not guest of the resort. This place kind of looked upmarket, and the sand and beach here was like better than the earlier one. Beach and water was very clean and should be an enjoyable place to hang out.

Next was Telok Kemang public beach. This was to be our lunch place. The beach itself was very crowded. Food here was so so, with all the stalls selling the same thing. We ordered lunch. There were lots of flies buzzing around and eating wasn't that pleasant an experience. While D was trying to finish lunch, I moved around to have a look at the beach. This place was kind of like the equivalent of our East Coast Park. Lots of activities and people, complete with ice cream man.

Another view

After lunch, we finally reached the Cape, but I couldn't see the light house. It is an important landmark in Port Dickson, with some history to it. I think there was a war fought here, but I didn't quite read up on the history. The Blue Lagoon was also found here. Due to the low tide, the water was very far off. But there were lots of interesting sights walking along the sand. Lots of small fishes were trapped in pools of water. And the tiny red crabs were all crawling all over. Quite a breath taking sight when they were doing it en masse. Very much like tiny red ants. The children had a great time catching them and generally had fun. But it got a bit out of hand when they started throwing sand at each other. D and E had a good scolding after that.

I took out my rod and tried casting with my grub. The water was very shallow, and there wasn't any bite. But it was a great feeling to be able to do that, throwing out my lines towards the open sea. There was a malay family doing netting. They did catch some small fishes.

Great to be sitting here and having a sip at the local soft drinks

Me at Telok Pelandok

From there, we moved to Teluk Pelandok. From the internet, it looked like a nice place with a jetty. It mentioned that people come here to fish. But reaching there, it was just a small fishing house, with boats parking alongside it. A very small place indeed. But the jetty was there. An indeed, there was 1 person that was fishing. A bought some locally made soft drinks. The weather being very cooling, we sat there and enjoyed the breeze. Again I took out my rod to test the water. But no bites at all. Water was too murky and too rough for lures to work, I think.

Coastal road drive to Melaka

Melaka
Craving for Chicken rice ball

Alamak, the famous one is behind us. :P

From there, we drove down all the way along the coast to reach Melaka. We had a sumptous Melaka Chicken rice ball there. In our excitement, we missed out the "real" famous chicken rice stall just behind us. But no matter, the other one looked more expensive.

It was already dark after dinner. I took the NSH back all the way to Singapore via the 2nd link. We reached home at 11pm. A very tiring but fruitful trip indeed.
